Autumn is my preferred time to go sowing and planting in the polytunnel. I grow salads and broccoli and carrots and peas, onions and garlic, kale and spinach, among others. I also like to grow herbs and flowers to use to keep away pests from veggie plants. End August / early September is the perfect time to start.
For the past few years we have delivered, through Co Waterford VEC, a course in “getting the most out of your polytunnel this autumn”. This year we are starting a little earlier to ensure we are in time for all the sowing dates to be covered. The course will start at Blackwater Garden Centre on Saturday 1 September, 10 to 12 noon and run weekly until Saturday 20 October (8weeks). It will include preparing and feeding soils for sowing and planting, raising and looking after a range of veg and herb plants, pest and disease control without using chemicals, and ventilation, watering and maximising light. We will be raising plants for participants to take home and grow on from there.
Cost of course is € 120.00. Booking is essential (places limited to 12), through Blackwater Garden Centre 024 92725
Blackwater Garden Centre is part of the Waterford Garden Trail, a collection of professional garden centres and visitor gardens in Co Waterford.
